The Standard, Brussels Overview

First Impressions

Walking into The Standard, Brussels, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical European business hotel. The lobby has this sleek, almost New York-ish vibe that feels refreshingly modern in a city where most luxury hotels lean heavily into old-world charm. I mean, don’t get me wrong — I love a good historic property, but sometimes you want something that feels like it belongs in this century. The five-star rating here actually feels earned rather than just inherited from decades of reputation.

Prime Real Estate

The location on Koning Albert II Laan puts you right in Brussels‘ business district, which might sound boring but honestly works perfectly. You’re a quick metro ride from Grand Place and all the tourist spots, but you’re also walking distance to Brussels North Station — super handy if you’re doing day trips or have early flights. What I really appreciated was being close to the European Quarter without being stuck in the middle of all that institutional chaos. Couples seem to get this balance too, rating the location 8.6, and I can see why.

The Room Experience

My room had floor-to-ceiling windows that actually opened (you’d be surprised how rare that is in modern hotels), and the design struck this nice balance between minimalist and comfortable. The bed was properly firm — none of that squishy European mattress nonsense — and the bathroom had one of those rainfall showers that actually has decent water pressure. Small detail, but the blackout curtains were genuinely effective, which matters when you’re dealing with jet lag or those long summer evenings Brussels gets.

Morning Fuel

Breakfast here runs the gamut from a full buffet spread to grab-and-go options, which is honestly perfect depending on your schedule. The buffet has all the Belgian classics you’d expect — proper bread, local cheeses, decent coffee — but also enough international options that you won’t feel trapped in carb heaven every morning. On days when I had early meetings, the breakfast-to-go option was a lifesaver, and they actually put some thought into making it substantial rather than just tossing a sad croissant in a bag.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both polished and unpretentious. The staff knows their stuff without being overly formal, and there’s this sense that they’ve thought through the details that business travelers and tourists actually care about. The luxury here feels practical rather than showy — fast wifi, reliable service, a restaurant that doesn’t require you to dress up, and parking that doesn’t involve a twenty-minute walk through underground tunnels. It’s the kind of place where you can conduct business during the day and still feel relaxed enough to enjoy Brussels in the evening.

Reviews of The Standard, Brussels

  • Paul from Netherlands – 2 June 2025 (9/10)

Hotel interior is amazing. Nice rooftop bar and nice restaurant.
    Comfy and nice looking room.

What could be improved: No proper way to make a coffee in the morning. Bit clumsy coffee pads

  • Anne from United Kingdom – 27 May 2025 (8/10)

Nice new hotel. Room very stylish and comfortable although I would have appreciated some coffee in addition to the teabags that were provided. Lovely good quality toiletries provided. Further improvements would be a makeup/shaving mirror in the bathroom and an iron or trouser press. The mini bar was well stocked, if a little overpriced. Breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice although the service was very slow, I waited over 50 minutes for my eggs one morning and noticed a number of other guests complaining re waiting times for their food too. Food in the restaurant for dinner was of ok quality but the menu was limited – I would recommend eating elsewhere really. Staff were pleasant but seemed a little out of their depth at times, probably because the hotel had only been open for two weeks when I stayed there.

  • Gergana from Bulgaria – 27 May 2025 (9/10)

Very kind and efficient staff, great design, fantastic view, comfortable bed, all amenities available in the room. Very comfortable and clean. Very short distance from the North train station, walkable if you arrive during the day.

What could be improved: Located in a relatively recently gentrified area and surrounded by office buildings, the streets nearby are empty at night and it didn’t feel ok walking back in the dark part of the day. No proper coffee maker in the room and nowhere to get a decent cup of coffee late in the evening. The restaurant waitress was not kind at all when asked for a cup of coffee at 10:45, said they were closed despite that people were still finishing their meals. Fortunately the bar tender was more responsive. No take away cups in the restaurant, had to go and get the ones in my room. No mirror near daylight in the room. I hope the check-out process would be improved. It is a bit too slow as it currently stands.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Jamie from Ireland – 25 May 2025 (8/10)

    Very clean, friendly and modern

What could be improved: Not telling me about the extra city tax until checkout

  • Andrea from Netherlands – 23 May 2025 (9/10)

The hotel just open a couple of weeks ago and everything is new and immaculate. Rooms are quite ample, well fit and stylish. The three bars are nice, the cocktail bar at ground floor is small and stylish with its towering spirits shelf in glossy red, the one at floor 29 offers an wide terrace, partly planted allowing a 360° view over Brussels. On the roof-top also sits the restaurant whose menu is inspired by a modern interpretation of the spanish cuisine and dishes are well prepared. Restaurant ambience and décor are pretty nice and the audio diffusion system both inside and outside is high quality. The staff is super kind and prompt to help.

  • Pouria from United Kingdom – 18 May 2025 (9/10)

    New and clean

  • Christian from Luxembourg – 17 May 2025 (9/10)

The hotel opened the other week and is therefore brand-new. I loved the stylish rooms, the view from my room on the 22th floor and in general the vibe of the hotel. While the breakfast buffet was much more limited than that of similar hotels, I was impressed by the quality of the hot dish that was offered. I ordered a smashed avocado toast, which was truly delicious.

What could be improved: It seems that the interior designer has sometimes prioritized form over function. If I had shared my room with somebody else, I would not have liked the fact that there was a glass window dividing the bathroom and bedroom that left the shower in full view.

  • Jim from Netherlands – 15 May 2025 (8/10)

Friendly staff, mid-century interiors, epic views from high floor rooms, well-stocked minibar, chic shower room, comfortable bed and pillows, desk area in room for working if needed, great breakfast/brunch options, easy parking via Interparking Zin underground parking next door (28EUR p/day), 30 mins walk from the city centre and close to metro/train station.

Don't forget to visit the top floor bar and leafy garden viewing area for views across the city as well as the indoor garden terrace next to the ground floor breakfast/bar.

Massive shout out to the front desk team for compensating us at check-out for the issues experienced as part of opening week, too.

What could be improved: We arrived a few days after the hotel opening so it was a bit chaotic at times tbh which made things slightly irritating. It was clear that the team isn't quite in sync yet between front desk/restaurant/operations/building maintenance and that there are still a few things to work out.

    – It was a friendly check-in experience but we were not explained times of breakfast or where to find lifts so had to ask the check-in staff ourselves, when it would be easy to just let us know before handing us the key.
    – We arrived late at night after a few hours of travel so were pretty tired and found the toilet in room was not flushing. We reported it to night staff and they didn't know that hotel toilet issue was still ongoing as it was supposedly fixed a few days before. Requested a room change to help resolve. Good if the team / cleaner / plumber checks this before rooms are assigned especially as it seems others have had similar issues.
    – The assigned room was really hot and we couldn't turn on the aircon fan (found it after a reset and going deep into the manual/settings ourselves) so good if there is some kind of check on the default settings as seems to have been installed incorrectly for first time use.
    – The shower room was great but the moody lighting could be increased a few notches as default.
    – Glassware on display was dirty in the room, needs to be checked before putting it on the backlit glass shelves
    – Dusty surfaces on window seating in the room where cleaning had missed.
    – The cleaner accessed our room to clean it before check out despite leaving a "still snoozing" hanger on the door
    – Staff being interviewed in the lobby.
    – Our breakfast booking was not recorded for some reason so the staff member had to check it multiple times on pieces of paper and also check our reservation on my mobile.

All of these things can be resolved fairly easily once there is a better flow between staff in place.

  • Jess from Oman – 11 May 2025 (9/10)

We are blessed to be part of their opening day!
It was also my wife’s birthday!! They gave her a complimentary cake and treats plus a personalized message. We had a great time!

What could be improved: Nothing, it was perfect!
